YouTube, MySpace banned on DoD computers
Written by Doogie
Monday, 14 May 2007

Defense Department computer users will YouTube no more, as officials say troops’ use of that highly popular Web site and 11 others is interfering with the ability to send official data over the military’s own computer network.

“It is a bandwidth issue,” said Army Lt. Col. Randi Steffy, a spokeswoman for U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Neb.

The widespread use of the sites had become a network management issue, she said, with operational security an additional, but secondary, consideration.

“There is a benefit to blocking commercial sites that get a lot of DoD traffic,” she said. “More traffic from users opens [the network] up to malicious activity.”

ABOARD USS JOHN C. STENNIS — U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney issued a warning to Iran while aboard an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf on Friday, saying the United States would join allies to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons “and dominating the region.”

With two U.S. carrier groups now in the region, Cheney declared, “We’re sending clear messages to friends and adversaries alike. We’ll keep the sea lanes open.”

Iran exerts considerable control over the narrow passageway that separates the Persian Gulf from the open waters of the Arabian Sea. Roughly a quarter of the world’s oil supplies pass through the Straits of Hormuz.

Bush Seeks Compromise on Benchmarks

Associated Press  |  May 10, 2007
WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush, under growing political pressure, agreed to negotiate with Congress on a war-spending bill that sets benchmarks for progress in Iraq.

The turnabout in Bush's position came as Republicans expressed anxieties about the war, and the House of Representatives was expected to pass legislation that would cut off funding for U.S. troops as early as July.

Bush said he would veto the measure. "We reject that idea. It won't work," the president said, speaking to reporters at the Defense Department's Pentagon headquarters after a briefing on Iraq and Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON — Two retired Army major generals with experience in Iraq will appear in television commercials critical of President George W. Bush’s handling of the war. The ads, to begin airing Wednesday, take aim at key Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Financed by VoteVets.org, the $500,000 in ads will feature retired Major Generals John Batiste and Paul Eaton, both of whom have criticized civilian leaders of the U.S. Defense Department in the past. Batiste commanded the 1st U.S. Infantry Division in Iraq, and Eaton oversaw training of the Iraqi military from 2003 to 2004.

Fort Dix Murder Plot Foiled
Written by Doogie
Wednesday, 07 July 2004
FORT DIX, New Jersey - Six Islamic militants from the former Yugoslavia and the Middle East were arrested on charges of plotting to attack the Fort Dix Army post and "kill as many soldiers as possible," authorities said Tuesday.

In conversations secretly recorded by an FBI informant over the past year, the men talked about killing in the name of Allah and attacking U.S. warships that might dock in Philadelphia, according an FBI criminal complaint.

"This was a serious plot put together by people who were intent on harming Americans," U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie said Tuesday. "We're very gratified federal law enforcement was able to catch these people before they acted and took innocent life."
