U.S. takes Georgian troops home from Iraq |

The U.S. Air Force brought all 2,000 Georgian troops home from Iraq aboard C-17 Globemasters Sunday and Monday after the Georgian government recalled the troops to combat the advance of Russian troops into the country, said Lt. Gen. Gary North, commander of U.S. Air Forces Central. |

The “inequitable, inflexible, inefficient” military retirement system should be replaced with a combination of cash and deferred compensation that would allow for vesting with as few as 10 years of service and special pays that would give service officials the tools to retain or separate service members based on force requirements, a Pentagon study recommends. And to try it on for size, the Defense Department should initiate a multiyear field test with volunteers who, at the end of the test, could choose to opt back into the traditional system and its 20-year retirement baseline. |

The end of an era went out with a blast. An Air Force special operations crew dropped the last “Daisy Cutter” bomb July 15 on the Utah Test and Training Range. The Reserve’s 711th Special Operations Squadron, an MC-130E Combat Talon I unit based out of Duke Field, Fla., turned the 15,000-pound bomb into a fireball. |
